One afternoon of our program is dedicated
to an excursion into the Castilian countryside. As our mini-bus
winds its way down narro w country roads through a rocky terrain, we pass tiny
villages, the ruins of early Romanesque churches, small farms, fields
of rosemary and thyme, and the occasional shepherd tending his
flock. The highlight of our day is a visit to Pedraza, a gem of
a quaint pueblo where we explore a privately-owned castle, antique
and interior-decorating shops, galleries, and a movie-set dungeon.
Pedraza's cuisine is known throughout Spain. It is here that
the "horno de asar" or rustic wood-stove kitchen prevails,
and where we enjoy a superb lamb meal roasted before our eyes
in the traditional Medieval manner.
